The Ten Commandments for the modern world

There are actually just two primary commandments, all of the listed Ten Commandments are simply detailed specifications of the two.

The first:
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your mind, and with all your spirit.
is detailed with commandments one, two, and three.
The Second:
You shall love your neighbor as you love yourself.
is detailed in the remaining
commandments.
  1. You shall have no other gods.
  2. You shall not take the name of the Lord God in vain.
  3. You shall remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.
  4. You shall Honor your Mother and Father.
  5. You shall not kill.
  6. You shall not commit adultery.
  7. You shall not steal.
  8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  9. You shall not covet your neighbors house.
  10. You shall not covet anything of your neighbors.

The Ten Commandments for today.
  1. There is a God, and there is only one, do not create for yourself a whole host of deities or idols to control all aspects of your life or the lives of others.
  2. Calling on God, by name or any other way, to cause harm or suggest harm to another is wrong.
  3. Take one day in seven for yourself, relax and enjoy life, family, and nature.
  4. Be the best person and member of the community that you can be, as this will bring honor to your parents.
  5. Do not take the life of another creature if you have any other choice.  Killing should always be a last resort and an admission of failure.
  6. If you are in an exclusive relationship, be it marriage, employment or other, end that relationship before you start another.
  7. Do not take anything that belongs to another by theft or fraud.  Work for what you need and want.
  8. Do not tell lies that could cause harm to another.  Do not pass on rumors or gossip about another person.
  9. Do not so desire your neighbors living arrangements that you are tempted to take it from her or him by theft or fraud.
  10. Do not so desire anything that belongs to your neighbor that you are tempted to obtain it by theft or fraud.

In regard to the first commandment many people have turned langauge into idols. Some Christians will not except religious speech that does not use the language of the King James era and the King James translation of the Bible.

In the United States and other places, people sometimes get violent over the use of languages other than the one they speak and believe appropriate.  There is nothing special about English, French, Spanish, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, or any other language.  Language is purely a creation of humankind.  Spoken language is nothing more than a series of compressions and rarefactions in the air that our ears transmit to our brains which then make sense of it.

God sees what is in our hearts and minds, not the noise that comes out of our mouth.
